delays at sfo. >> roberta gonzales is at the airport for us now with more. how long are we talking? >> reporter: right now the rain has stopped. we have a little reprieve but winds have been problematic gusting up to 37 miles an hour. behind me is an empty runway. this is something that you should not be seeing at this time of the day. it should be filled with arriving and departure flights. right now we have one cancellation of an international plane but we have so many cancellations of arriving flights for monterey, from orange county, from santa barbara. and earlier today we had over 4 hour delays on arriving flights. i just went inside the terminal and took another look. it looks like we are still seeing delays up to 2 hours and 24 minutes on arriving flights. what the duty manager says is that even if we begin to pick up some of these rates of departing flights we'll still have problems now on arrivals because it takes a while to get these planes turned around after such a huge delay. so word of advice, if you are coming to sfo, it's advisable to call ahead because this is goi

: absolutely major delays for some people. wet, rainy weather causing serious delays. we are here at sfo. you can see the rain still coming down. it's more of a heavy drizzle right now. it's not a driving rain. it certainly did cause a lot of delays just as thousands of people took the air. ktvu camera was there early this morning as delayed passengers collected their luggage. at least 81 flights were canceled due to the rain, the low cloud cover forced the airport to shut down one runway and alter flight pattern. they restricted the oneway to 27 flights per hour as opposed to the 90 flights per hour. >> about seven hour. we got in about 6:00 and our plane got delayed. we were supposed to lee at 9:00 then it got pushed back to 1:00. >> reporter: delays of three, four, and up to seven hours not unusual. there is also weather delays in other parts of the country. that is compounding the problem which could make for another day of delayed flights here at sfo. we will monitor this situation here at sfo as the rain develops throughout the day and let you know how that effects holiday travel patter
thanksgiving is very busy. christien kafton is live at sfo. is it smooth sailing now? >> reporter: that's what we're hearing. we're at the virgin america ticket area. things are moving along quite nicely. flights in and out of sfo are packed full and are flying, by and large, on time. >> passenger loads are up about 3% year over year since last year. but everything is operating smoothly. >> reporter: there were problems late into last night lasting into this morning. rainy weather led to faa restrictions an 81 flights were canceled -- and 81 flights were canceled. >> reporter: some passengers had three, four, even seven- hour delays getting into the terminal leading to some frustrated travelers. >> they didn't do a very good job of like keeping us updated on if things were gonna change and the crew was late getting back when we could have left earlier. they treated us fine once we were on the flight but i was just frustrated. everyone was. >> reporter: by 4:30 this morn, passengers found the occasional crowd and then the departures. they said even the rain didn't damage their optimism. >> so f
